Our Belief
If given the right tools and a responsive environment, Uganda´s entrepreneurs will succeed at climbing the socioeconomic ladder. The question is whether these entrepreneurs will have a real net impact; whether or not they will contribute to the social and economic growth of the larger community. We believe that providing access to markets and expanding access to education are only part of the change needed in the ¨developing world.¨ Real change will come from the people who begin departing from preconceived notions of what is possible. These individuals will operate in all sectors and at all levels of society with a new approach. These change-makers will question the boundaries and the possibilities of our existing institutions to really make people better off. They will begin to innovate. Under a new light, business can become an instrument of change and hope for a community, rather than a symbol of the extraordinary wealth of a few. To cause change, we all must begin to see the world differently.

The Problem
The learning environment for most all Ugandan children stifles creativity and entrepreneurial thought. Teachers in Ugandan schools act solely as sources of knowledge, and student participation and collaboration are rarely encouraged. The potential of the education system to truly empower the youth will not be realized until the students themselves become the focus of the classroom environment. Similarly, the potential of the private sector to have a positive impact on the lives of the majority of Ugandans will not be realized until more innovators have access to credit and the employed have a mindset and a mechanism for saving and investment.

Our Response
We want to facilitate the development and capacity of social innovators. So we decided to start a company called Enjuba, which means ¨rising sun¨ in Luganda. Enjuba has two arms. One arm is a clothing company that sells fashionable products handmade by Ugandan artisans to customers around the world; this arm also provides Ugandan artisans with opportunities to invest in their businesses and families. Enjuba´s other arm is an education program in secondary schools that uses social entrepreneurship as a platform for positive change. Both are used to empower Ugandan artisans and Ugandan youth, and both arms work towards our goal of facilitating the development of passionate and competent social innovators. Furthermore, Enjuba´s arms sustain each other- the clothing company funds the education program, and the education program creates a powerful non-monetary incentive for Enjuba´s artisans to create unique, quality products. Enjuba´s artisans are proud to know that their products are spurring a movement to make our world a better place.
