Youth Empowerment

Overview
Enjuba´s mission is to put forth a new approach in Ugandan classrooms, one that advocates for active learning, peer collaboration, and creative problem solving- the foundation for empowering the youth with the skills and mindset of an entrepreneurial thinker who will work to break the cycle of poverty and dependency in Uganda. We are currently implementing our first program in Masooli Secondary School, just outside of Kampala, Uganda. We introduce the students to the ideas of social entrepreneurship. The various activities and discussions teach them business and entrepreneurship skills, and empower them to tackle the biggest problems they face in their communities using a sustainable business model. Within six months the club will be starting its own social business venture with the aim of addressing one of the problems they think needs the greatest attention.

Curriculum Modules
At the S-4 (US 10th grade) level, students are able to join Enjuba´s Social Entrepreneurship Club, where, as a team, they proceed through our curriculum. The program is designed for each student to first explore his/her own values, talents, interests, strengths and weaknesses, and to then find commonalities with peers as they transform into a working team. The kids are then encouraged to look at their community critically, recognizing its history, its structure, its assets as well as its weaknesses, as they begin to realize how they, as a group and as individuals, fit into an equation with positive impact as its result.

After the first module focusing on human and psychosocial development, the students begin learning basic life and entrepreneurship skills such as risk taking, critical thinking, teamwork, planning problem solving, and leadership. The program constantly ties these entrepreneurship skill sessions back to the practical world and encourages the students to think deeply about the implications of what they are learning. Through discussions and activities, the children are always at the center of their own learning.

The final module focuses on how the group can harness its skills to have a positive impact on the community. The module includes an overview of the fundamentals of business such as sustainability, money management, and organizational structure. This provides the foundation for the group to begin brainstorming on how they can come together and take action.

We are aiming for every young person in Uganda to be not only able, but also passionate about facilitating social and economic progress in their communities, their country, and our world. We feel that our program empowers youth with the theoretical foundation and practical tools to lead this movement for change in all sectors.
